The oil pan on an E30 is in a very vulnerable position under the vehicle, and this problem only gets worse with lowering. Breaking an oil pan on an E30 is so commonplace that it has almost become a right of passage. But since it is such a common failure point, finding a used one can be difficult, and it's only getting harder as the years go by. Luckily, BMW still produces these pans, and the pricing isn't that far off what people charge for used ones. It can also be beneficial to start with a new pan if you plan on welding baffles inside, as welding to used cast aluminum can be tricky for even the best welder.
